Slovenske Konjice is a municipality in northeastern Slovenia, lying in the Dravinja River Valley between the Pohorje mountain range to the north and the Konjiška Gora hills to the south. The area is part of the traditional Styria region and is known for its rolling vineyard-covered hills, medieval landmarks, and thermal springs. The municipality covers approximately 98 km² and takes its name from its principal settlement, the historic town of Slovenske Konjice.
The town of Slovenske Konjice has a long history dating back to the 12th century, when it was a significant market centre on the route between Celje and Maribor. Its well-preserved old core features a medieval square, a Gothic parish church, and the ruins of Gonšče Castle overlooking the town. The surrounding countryside, with its thermal spa at Zreče and the scenic Dravinja Valley, makes the municipality a popular destination for wellness tourism, wine tasting, and outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling.
When to Visit
Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) offer the most pleasant weather for exploring the town and countryside, with mild temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer (July to August) is warm and busy, particularly around the thermal spa resorts. The Konjiška Gora Wine Festival in September celebrates the local grape harvest with tastings and traditional music. Winter (December to March) is quieter, though the thermal spas at Zreče operate year-round and nearby Rogla offers skiing.
