About Sentjernej

Šentjernej (St. Bartholomew) is a historic market town and the administrative centre of the Municipality of Šentjernej in southeastern Slovenia, in the traditional region of Lower Carniola (Dolenjska). Located in the Krka River Valley, the town has been continuously inhabited since prehistoric times, with archaeological evidence of Iron Age and Roman settlements. It developed as a medieval market town under the protection of the Counts of Gorjanci, and its name derives from the parish church of St. Bartholomew.

The town's compact old core is centred on a spacious market square, surrounded by well-preserved burgher houses and dominated by the Gothic parish church. The surrounding municipality is known for its thermal springs (Šmarješke Toplice), vineyards on the Gorjanci slopes, and the scenic Krka River. The climate is continental, with warm summers and cold winters. The best time to visit is from May to October, with September and October being particularly attractive for the wine harvest season.
