Overview

Šenčur is a municipality in northwestern Slovenia, situated in the Ljubljana Basin on the edge of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. Located just a few kilometres east of the city of Kranj and about 20 km north of Ljubljana, the municipality is a predominantly residential and agricultural area that has grown in popularity as a commuter base for the capital. The municipality takes its name from the main settlement of Šenčur (a contraction of Šent Jurij, St. George), and covers an area of approximately 40 km².

Despite its proximity to Ljubljana, Šenčur retains a distinctly rural character, with farmland, woodland, and small villages scattered across gentle hills. The municipality's main attraction is its proximity to the Brdo Estate, a historic mansion and park complex that serves as a Slovenian government protocol venue, occasionally open to the public. The nearby Kamnik–Savinja Alps provide a dramatic backdrop to the north, and the area offers several pleasant walking and cycling routes through the countryside.

When to Visit

Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the most pleasant seasons, with moderate temperatures and clear skies ideal for outdoor activities. Summer (July to August) is warm, with temperatures occasionally reaching 30°C. The Šenčur Summer Festival in July brings concerts and community events. Winter is cold but offers easy day-trip access to the ski resorts of Krvavec and Velika Planina, about 30–40 minutes north.

Cuisine

The cuisine of the Šenčur area reflects the broader Upper Carniola (Gorenjska) culinary tradition. Local specialities include kranjska klobasa (Carniolan sausage), štruklji (rolled dumplings with various fillings), and jota (a hearty stew of sauerkraut, beans, and pork). The nearby Brdo Estate produces wine from its own vineyards, and local honey and dairy products are available from farms in the area. Several gostilnas in the municipality serve traditional Slovenian dishes made with locally sourced ingredients.

Culture & Festivals

The Šenčur Summer Festival in July features open-air concerts, folk dancing, and sports events in the village centre. The feast of St. George (23 April), the municipal patron saint, is marked with a church fair and community gathering. The municipality's cultural heritage is preserved by local ethnographic and mountaineering societies, which organise guided walks and traditional craft workshops. The nearby Brdo Estate occasionally hosts cultural events and exhibitions.
