About Portoroz
Portorož (Italian: Portorose, literally "Port of Roses") is an Adriatic-Mediterranean coastal resort in the Municipality of Piran, southwestern Slovenia. Its modern development began in the late 19th century with the appearance of the first health resorts, and by the early 20th century it had become one of the grandest seaside resorts in Central Europe, alongside Opatija, Lido, and Grado — then all part of the Austrian Littoral. Today it remains one of Slovenia's major tourist areas, with a 2 km promenade lined with hotels, restaurants, and beach facilities.
The resort centres on Hotel Palace, once one of the most important hotels for the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and still one of the finest between Venice and Dubrovnik. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers (28–35°C in July and August) and mild winters (5–12°C). Unlike Piran's rocky piers, Portorož has a longer, sandier beach with sun loungers and watersports facilities. The best time to visit is May–September, with July and August being the peak season.

By Plane
Portorož has its own small international airport (POW IATA), the smallest of Slovenia's three international airports, located about 5 km south. It handles limited scheduled flights and seasonal charters. A taxi to the resort centre costs €10–15. Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU IATA) is 135 km away (2 hours by car or bus).
By Train
There is no railway station in Portorož. The nearest train station is in Koper (15 km north). From Koper, take a local bus (25 minutes) or taxi (€15–20) to Portorož.
By Car / Road
From Ljubljana, take the A1 motorway to the Koper exit, then follow the coastal road south (total 130 km, 1.5 hours). Parking in Portorož is easier than in Piran but still expensive (approx. €10–15 per day in hotel parking). Buses from Ljubljana (2–2.5 hours) stop at the Portorož coach station. Flixbus operates regular services to/from Portorož. All buses to and from Piran stop in Portorož along the way.
Portorož is walkable — the main resort strip is about 2 km long. A city bus connects Portorož with Piran, Bernardin, and Lucija every 15 minutes. The free shuttle between Piran and Portorož stops at several points along the coast. Bicycle rental is available at hotels.
Things to do
Forma Viva — An open-air sculpture park 2.5 km south of the centre past the marina, located on the Seča peninsula with beautiful sea views. One of four Forma Viva sculpture parks, this one focuses on stone sculptures. Free entry, always open.
Kempinski Palace — The historic Hotel Palace building itself is a tourist attraction, a grand 1910 building that reopened in 2008 as a 5-star Kempinski hotel. Worth visiting even if you're not staying, for the architecture and the sea-view terrace.
Beach day — Unlike Piran, Portorož has proper beach facilities with sun loungers, umbrellas, and watersports including jet-skiing, parasailing, and paddleboarding.
Casino — Portorož has a casino (Casino Portorož) on the main promenade, one of the few in Slovenia.
Spa and wellness — Several hotels offer thalasso therapy, thermal pools, and spa packages. The Kempinski Palace has a particularly luxurious spa.
Coastal walk to Piran — Walk the scenic 2 km coastal path from Portorož to Piran, passing through Bernardin and along the cliffside.
Boat trips — Seasonal boat excursions from the marina to Piran, Izola, and along the coast.
