About Devin
Devín is a historic village at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers, on the western edge of Bratislava. Its defining landmark is Devín Castle (Devínsky hrad), a dramatically situated ruin perched on a sheer limestone cliff 212 metres above the river confluence. The site has been fortified since Celtic times, with the current castle originating in the 9th century as the centre of the Great Moravian Empire.
Devín is one of Slovakia's most significant national symbols and heritage sites. The castle was largely destroyed by Napoleon's troops in 1809, but its romantic ruins overlooking the meeting of two rivers — and the border of three countries — make it one of the most photographed locations in Slovakia. The site also includes a well-preserved early medieval church and a memorial to the victims of the Iron Curtain (the border with Austria was heavily fortified here during Communism).
