Why visit Bratislava?
Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is a charming and increasingly vibrant city of about 475,000 inhabitants, situated on the Danube River at the foot of the Little Carpathians. It is the only national capital in the world that borders two other countries — Austria and Hungary — with Vienna just 60 km west and Budapest 200 km east. The city's compact Old Town, crowned by the iconic Bratislava Castle, is a delightful maze of cobblestone streets, Baroque palaces, and cozy squares.
Bratislava has a layered history stretching back to the Roman era, when it was known as Posonium. It served as the coronation capital of the Kingdom of Hungary for nearly 300 years (1563–1830), and 11 Hungarian kings and 8 queens consort were crowned in St. Martin's Cathedral. The city experienced significant development during the Communist era, which left a ring of prefabricated panelák housing estates, but the historic core has been beautifully restored since the Velvet Revolution. Today Bratislava is a youthful, dynamic city with a thriving arts scene, excellent culinary offerings, and a wonderfully relaxed pace of life.

By Plane
Bratislava Airport (BTS) is about 9 km northeast of the city centre. A regular bus (line 61) connects the airport to the main railway station (20 minutes). Taxis cost around €20–25. Vienna International Airport (VIE) is only 60 km away, with direct buses from Bratislava taking about 1 hour.
By Train
Bratislava's main railway station (Bratislava hlavná stanica) has frequent connections to Vienna (1 hour), Budapest (2.5 hours), Prague (4 hours), Košice (5 hours), and Žilina (2 hours). Trains are operated by ZSSK and international services by ÖBB, RegioJet, and Leo Express.
By Car / Road
The D1 and D2 motorways converge at Bratislava, connecting to Prague (3 hours), Vienna (45 minutes), Budapest (2 hours), and Košice (5 hours). Parking in the Old Town is limited and expensive — use the park-and-ride facilities on the outskirts.
The Old Town is compact and best explored on foot. Public transport (DPB) consists of trams, buses, and trolleybuses, with a single ticket costing €1.10 (valid for 60 minutes). A 30-minute ticket is €0.90. The historic tram line along the Danube riverfront is particularly scenic. Taxis and ride-hailing apps (Bolt, Uber) are widely available. Bicycles can be rented through the Slovnaft BAjk bike-sharing system.
