Thionck-Essyl

Thionck-Essyl is a Jola (Diola) town roughly 65 km northwest of Ziguinchor, on the Casamance River in Lower Casamance. Tradition traces its origins to settlers from the old kingdom of Mof-Ewi who arrived from what is now Guinea-Bissau; for a long time it was considered the largest village in Senegal before being formally urbanized as a commune in 1990. Its population was recorded at around 8,000 in the 2002 census. The local economy centres on rice and groundnut farming, and community life still draws heavily on Jola music and dance traditions.
