Diouloulou

Ziguinchor, Senegal

Why visit Diouloulou?

Diouloulou is a small town and commune in the Bignona department of the Ziguinchor region, in the far southwest of Senegal near the Gambian border. It sits along the N5 road amid the rice paddies and mangrove creeks of Lower Casamance, and functions mainly as a local market and administrative centre for the surrounding farming villages, whose economy rests on rice, millet, and cashew cultivation. The town's population has grown steadily, from around 2,700 in the early 2000s to over 8,000 at the most recent census. Casamance saw decades of intermittent low-level unrest tied to the separatist MFDC movement, and Diouloulou's area was touched by sporadic incidents in the past; conditions have settled considerably in recent years, but travellers should check current advisories before heading into rural parts of the department.
