Basse-Casamance National Park

Ziguinchor, Senegal

Why visit Basse-Casamance National Park?

Basse-Casamance National Park is a protected area of about 5,000 hectares near Oussouye in the Ziguinchor region of southern Senegal, created in 1970. It protects a mix of dense forest, savannah, mangrove swamp, and wetland, home to around 200 bird species and roughly fifty mammal species including African forest buffalo, leopard, Campbell's mona monkey, and western red colobus; African manatees are also found in the wider Casamance River mangroves near the park. The park has been closed to visitors for an extended period because of the Casamance conflict and the risk of landmine contamination in and around the park — travelers should not assume it is currently open or safe to enter, and should verify its status locally before planning a visit.
