Velingara

Kolda, Senegal

Why visit Velingara?

Vélingara is a market town in southern Senegal's Kolda Region, in Upper Casamance near the Guinea-Bissau border, and is the capital of Vélingara department. It sits at the eastern edge of the Casamance region and gives its name to the Vélingara structure, a large (roughly 35–40 km diameter) buried geological feature studied by scientists as a candidate meteorite impact crater; the depression is mostly covered by sediment, with only a lateritic rim and scattered basement rock exposed, and geophysical surveys have found gravity and magnetic anomalies consistent with, though not yet proof of, an impact origin.
