Nioro du Rip
Kaolack, Senegal
Why visit Nioro du Rip?
Nioro du Rip is a town about 60 km southwest of Kaolack and roughly 27 km from the Gambian border. It was the capital of Rip, a small 19th-century state carved out of the territory formerly known as Badibou, ruled by the Muslim marabout Maba Diakhou Bâ (1809–1867), who led fierce resistance against both neighbouring animist kingdoms and French colonial expansion. The town grew up around trade routes linking Senegal's interior with coastal cities, and Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba Mbacké — who later founded the Mouride brotherhood — is said to have lived here at one point. Nioro du Rip also lies near one of the groups of ancient Senegambian stone circles, megalithic monuments dating back roughly to the eighth century.
