Guinguineo

Kaolack, Senegal

Why visit Guinguineo?

Guinguinéo is a town and commune in Kaolack Region, in the centre of Senegal, about 22 km northeast of Kaolack city. Before French colonial administration it was the seat of local Serer kingdoms, the most notable ruler remembered as Maad Saloum Fode N'Gouye Joof; the settlement became a commune in 1956 and a full municipality in 1960. Its own Département de Guinguinéo was carved out by presidential decree in 2008, moving it from the Fatick region into Kaolack. The town sits on the historic Dakar–Niger railway line and was traditionally a junction for a branch line toward Lyndiane, giving it a role as a regional farming and trade centre in the groundnut basin.
