Why visit Gandiaye?

Gandiaye is a town in Senegal's Kaolack department, on National Route 1 about 24 km from Kaolack city, with a 2023 census population of roughly 18,200 drawn from Serer, Wolof, Fula, Bambara, and Jola communities. It is one of five communes in Kaolack department, alongside Kahone, Kaolack, Ndoffane, and Sibassor. Gandiaye retains a traditional royal court, the Bour Gandiaye, assisted by ministers — a role subordinate to the King of Saloum that has existed for centuries and continues today. The town is religiously mixed, with Muslim, Catholic, and Serer traditional-religion communities and both Muslim and Catholic cemeteries. The local economy is mainly agricultural, along with trade with highway traffic on the N1 and fishing in the Saloum River's tributaries.
