About Vailima

Vailima is a village in the Tuamasaga district of Upolu island in Samoa, located in the foothills about 4 km south of central Apia. The village is world-famous as the final home of Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson, who spent his last years here and is buried on Mount Vaea overlooking the village. Vailima is part of the Tuamasaga political district.

Samoa has a warm tropical climate. The dry season (May to October) is the best time to visit.

How to reach

By Plane

Faleolo International Airport (APW) is about 35 km west — a 40-minute drive. Taxis cost around 55–70 WST.

By Train

By Car / Road

Vailima is about 4 km south of central Apia — a 10-minute drive via the Cross Island Road. Buses from Apia serve the route.

Buses and taxis connect Vailima to Apia. The village is walkable, though the surrounding hills are steep.
