Si'umu

Tuamasaga, Samoa

Why visit Si'umu?

Si'umu is a village on the south coast of Upolu, in the Tuamasaga district, where the Cross Island Road from Apia meets the sea. That junction makes it one of the most important crossroads for visitors on the island: drop down over the central ridge from the capital, about 45 minutes away, and you arrive on the south coast at Si'umu, with its beaches, lagoon and the start of Upolu's most popular resort strip. Where Apia is a working town on the north shore, the Si'umu and adjoining Maninoa coast is the island's holiday face — calm reef-protected water, white sand, and the polished resorts that make this the upscale heart of Upolu tourism.

Si'umu and its neighbours (Maninoa, Saleilua, Sa'agafou) host several of Samoa's best-known resorts, including Sinalei Reef Resort & Spa and Coconuts Beach Club, set on a fine stretch of south-coast lagoon. The reef offers good snorkelling, the surf breaks off this coast draw experienced surfers, and the position is ideal for day trips east to the To Sua Ocean Trench and the Lalomanu beaches, or back over the hill to Apia. Behind the coast, the land rises quickly into the forested interior of central Upolu, with waterfalls and the Lake Lanoto'o crater lakes accessible from the Cross Island Road.

The climate is tropical, with highs around 28–30 °C all year. The May–October dry season is peak and the best time for calm water; November–April is wetter, with the cyclone risk window. Sundays are strictly observed, though the resorts keep their dining and bars running.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Faleolo International Airport (APW) on Upolu's north-west coast is about 40–50 km / 1 hr from Si'umu, either via Apia and the Cross Island Road or along the west and south coasts. Resorts arrange airport transfers; a taxi is otherwise the simplest option (agree the fare first).

By Car / Road

Si'umu sits where the Cross Island Road reaches the south coast.

  • Apia: ~25 km / ~45 min north over the Cross Island Road.
  • To Sua Ocean Trench (Lotofaga): ~25 km / ~40 min east along the south coast.
  • Lalomanu (Aleipata): ~45 km / ~1 hr east.

The Cross Island Road is sealed and scenic but climbs and winds over the ridge; drive carefully in rain and mist. Village speed limits are enforced. Driving is on the left; a temporary Samoan permit (around WST 21) is required.

Buses: south-coast and Si'umu buses run from Apia's Maketi Fou (WST 4–6) in the morning, thinning out in the afternoon; a rental car or resort transfer is more practical.

At a resort on the Si'umu/Maninoa coast, the beach, pool, lagoon and dining are all on site, so many visitors barely move. To explore the wider south coast and the interior, a rental car or scooter is best; buses are sparse and there is no ride-hailing. Resorts can arrange tours and transfers. Pay any customary access fee where you use village beach land outside the resorts.

What are the things to do?

  • Si'umu / Maninoa beach and lagoon — the south coast's headline: a calm, reef-protected lagoon and white-sand shore, the setting for Upolu's upscale resorts; excellent for swimming and snorkelling.

  • South-coast reef — healthy coral and reef fish close to shore, with the resorts offering snorkelling and dive trips.

  • Cross Island Road scenery — the drive over the ridge from Apia passes waterfalls (e.g. Papapapai-tai Falls viewpoint) and rainforest, with the Lake Lanoto'o crater-lake walk accessible from near the summit.

  • Swim, snorkel and relax at the resorts — the calm lagoon and reef make this the prime stretch for an easy beach holiday on Upolu.

  • Surf the south-coast breaks — experienced surfers will find reef breaks off this coast; resorts and local operators can advise.

  • Day-trip the south and east — Si'umu is well placed for the To Sua Ocean Trench, Togitogiga and Sopo'aga Falls, and the Lalomanu beaches.

  • Drive the Cross Island Road to Apia — combine the south-coast resorts with a day in the capital, stopping at waterfalls and the Robert Louis Stevenson villa en route.

Where to eat?

The Si'umu/Maninoa resorts have the area's best dining — Sinalei and Coconuts Beach Club both run full restaurants and bars open to non-guests (book ahead), with seafood, Pacific-fusion and Western menus, plus weekly fiafia nights featuring Samoan dance and the fire-knife. Village fare nearby is classic Samoan — grilled reef fish, palusami, taro and breadfruit. Vegetarians do reasonably well at the resorts and on taro, breadfruit and palusami; flag strict needs ahead, as coconut cream is near-universal.

Where to drink?

Everyday drinks are koko Samoa and fresh green coconut; 'ava (kava) is the ceremonial drink. Vailima lager (and Taula) is the standard beer. Unlike most south-coast villages, the resort bars here keep proper evening service, including Sundays — sunset cocktails over the lagoon are a highlight. Tap water on Upolu is generally treated, but many visitors prefer bottled or filtered water; the resorts provide it.
