Why visit Palmiste?

Palmiste is a small hillside village in the Soufrière district of Saint Lucia, situated on the slopes above the coast road between Soufrière town and the northern part of the district. The settlement takes its name from the palm trees that dot the surrounding landscape. With a population of a few hundred, Palmiste is a quiet agricultural community where farming and fishing are the primary livelihoods.

The village occupies a moderately elevated position with views over the Caribbean coast. The terrain is steep and lush, with banana, cocoa, and coconut plantations on the lower slopes and dense rainforest higher up. The climate is warm and humid, with frequent showers nourishing the abundant vegetation.

By Plane

Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) near Vieux Fort is approximately 50 km to the south-east (~1 hr 15 min by taxi, EC$150–190). George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU) in Castries is approximately 50 km to the north (~1 hr 30 min by taxi, EC$150–190).

By Car / Road

Palmiste is reached from the coast road near Soufrière. The village is approximately 4 km from Soufrière town; the access road is narrow, winding, and steep. A car is recommended. There is no minibus service. Driving from Soufrière takes about 10 minutes.

The village is small and best explored on foot. The terrain is steep in places. There is no local transport. A car or pre-arranged taxi is needed for access to the coast road.
