Fond Saint Jacques
Soufrière, Saint Lucia
Why visit Fond Saint Jacques?
Fond Saint Jacques is an inland valley and settlement in the Soufrière district of Saint Lucia, situated in the shadow of the Pitons. The valley is one of the most historically significant areas on the island — it was the site of one of the earliest French colonial plantations and played a role in the island's turbulent history of slavery and rebellion. Today, the settlement is a quiet agricultural community surrounded by lush tropical forest.
The valley is narrow and fertile, carved by a river that flows from the volcanic highlands toward the coast. The surrounding terrain is steep and heavily forested, with the Pitons visible from several vantage points. The area receives significant rainfall, supporting dense vegetation and a rich variety of birdlife. The atmosphere is humid, green, and profoundly peaceful.
Fond Saint Jacques has limited tourist infrastructure but offers access to some of the best hiking in southern Saint Lucia. The Fond Saint Jacques heritage trail passes through the remains of the colonial plantation and into the forest. The settlement is suitable for travellers interested in history, nature, and hiking, with Soufrière town providing nearby services.
