About Labytnangi
Labytnangi is a small city in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, situated on the western bank of the Ob River directly opposite Salekhard. With a population of roughly 27,000, it serves primarily as the rail terminus for the Northern Polar Railway (Severopolyarnaya Zheleznaya Doroga), the most northerly rail line in Russia. The city's name derives from the Nenets word for "many larches," referencing the larch forests that once covered the area. Founded in 1975 alongside the construction of the railway, Labytnangi has functioned as the essential transit point for anyone arriving by train to visit Salekhard and the broader Yamal region.
The city experiences the same subarctic climate as Salekhard — long, dark winters with extreme cold and brief, luminous summers. Its location on the western bank of the Ob places it at the boundary between the taiga forest zone and the open tundra to the north. Labytnangi is smaller and quieter than Salekhard, with a more industrial character shaped by the railway and timber operations. For travellers, the city is primarily a transit point, but it also offers access to the Ob River, the surrounding taiga, and connections to more remote destinations deeper in the Yamal.
