About Vyshny Volochyok

Vyshny Volochyok is a small city in the northeastern part of Tverskaya oblast', situated approximately 120 km from Tver and 340 km northwest of Moscow. Founded in 1437, the city grew to prominence in the 18th century as the terminus of the Vyshny Volochyok Waterway, one of Russia's earliest canal systems, linking the Baltic Sea basin to the Volga River and ultimately the Caspian Sea. This strategic position made the city a vital commercial hub and attracted wealthy merchants who left behind an impressive collection of churches, mansions, and public buildings.

The city is set among the Valdai Hills, with the city's lakes and ponds forming part of the broader waterway system. The landscape is gently rolling, with mixed forests of birch and pine surrounding the urban area. The climate is humid continental, with cold winters (January average around -10°C) and mild summers (July average around 18°C). The city retains a quiet, provincial atmosphere, with a well-preserved historic centre that rewards unhurried exploration.

Today, Vyshny Volochyok has a population of roughly 45,000. It is an important railway junction on the Moscow–Saint Petersburg line, making it a convenient stop for travellers between the two capitals. The city is also known for its lace-making tradition, which has been practised since the 17th century and was once a major local industry.
