About Samarskaya Luka National Park
Samarskaya Luka National Park is one of Russia's largest national parks, established in 1984 to protect the dramatic landscape of the Samara Bend—the massive U-shaped meander of the Volga River that creates a peninsula enclosed by water on three sides. The park covers approximately 134,000 hectares and encompasses the Zhiguli Hills, a range of limestone mountains rising up to 381 metres above the Volga. The park lies within Samara Oblast, about 30–50 km from the city of Samara.
The Samara Bend is a landscape of exceptional natural beauty, where the Volga carves through forested limestone hills, creating steep cliffs, deep ravines, and secluded valleys. The park is home to over 1,000 plant species, 200 bird species, and numerous mammals including European bison (reintroduced), elk, wild boar, and beavers. The unique microclimate created by the river bend supports several endemic plant species found nowhere else.
The climate is continental, with warm summers (average July highs around 26–28°C) and cold winters (average January lows around –12 to –14°C). The park is most accessible from May to September, when trails are clear and boat excursions operate on the Volga. Winter brings heavy snow and limited access to some trails.
