About Sasovo
Sasovo is a town in the northeastern part of Ryazanskaya oblast', approximately 180 km from Ryazan city. With a population of around 25,000, it serves as an administrative centre for the surrounding Meshchera lowland region. The town has a quiet, provincial character and functions as a gateway to the unique Meshchera forest and wetland landscapes.
The surrounding area is characterised by dense mixed forests, peat bogs, and small rivers typical of the Meshchera lowlands — a vast, sparsely populated natural region that spans parts of Ryazan, Vladimir, and Moscow oblasts. The town itself is relatively modern, with most development occurring in the Soviet period, though the area has been inhabited for centuries.
Continental climate with cold winters (averaging −8°C to −11°C in January) and warm summers (averaging 17–23°C in July). The best time to visit is June through August for the warmest weather and longest days.

By Plane
By Train
Sasovo has a railway station on a branch line. Regional trains connect Sasovo to Ryazan (approximately 3–3.5 hours) and to Moscow (with a change at Ryazan). Schedules can be checked on the RZD website.
By Car / Road
Sasovo is accessible by road from Ryazan (approximately 180 km, 2.5–3 hours). Bus services connect Sasovo to Ryazan and other towns in the region. Road conditions in the Meshchera area can be poor, particularly in spring and autumn.
Sasovo is small and walkable. Local buses and minibuses serve the town and surrounding villages. Taxis are available but limited.
