Sebezh

Pskovskaya oblast', Russia

About Sebezh

Sebezh is a small historic town in the northwestern part of Pskovskaya oblast', located approximately 130 km northwest of Pskov near the Latvian border. Founded in the 14th century, it served as a frontier town guarding the approaches to Pskov from the west. The town is the administrative centre of the Sebezhsky District and the gateway to Sebezhsky National Park, one of Russia's smaller but ecologically significant protected areas.

Sebezh has a quiet, provincial character with a population of around 6,000. The town centre contains several historic churches and the remnants of a medieval fortress. Its position near the Latvian border gives it a slightly different cultural flavour from other towns in the oblast, with some historical ties to the Baltic region.

The climate is continental with cold winters and mild summers. The surrounding landscape of lakes, forests, and bogs is particularly scenic in autumn, when the foliage turns. Sebezh is a destination for those interested in nature, medieval history, and off-the-beaten-path Russian travel.
