Artyom

Primorskiy kray, Russia

About Artyom

Artyom is a satellite city located 50 km north of Vladivostok in Primorskiy kray. Named after revolutionary Artyom Sergeyev, the city was historically a mining town built on vast lignite coal reserves that powered much of the kray's electricity. Today the richest seams are largely exhausted, and Artyom has reinvented itself as a support town for the growing Vladivostok International Airport and a more affordable bedroom community for Vladivostok's expanding workforce. The population is approximately 100,000.

Artyom sits about 5 km from the airport, making it a practical overnight option for early-morning or late-night flights. The city's beaches, though crowded and basic, are popular summer destinations for residents of Vladivostok and the surrounding region. The climate mirrors Vladivostok's: cold, windy winters and warm, humid summers with occasional Pacific monsoon rains.

How to reach

By Plane

Vladivostok International Airport (VVO) is just outside the city, approximately 5 km from Artyom's centre. The airport is the largest in the Russian Far East, with domestic and international flights. From the airport, taxis and buses connect to both Artyom and Vladivostok.

By Train

Elektrichka commuter trains pass through Artyom from Nakhodka (twice daily) and from Vladivostok (more frequently). The journey from Vladivostok takes about one hour.

By Car / Road

Public buses and marshrutkas to and from Vladivostok and Ussuriysk depart from the airport square or the bus station at 45/1 Frunze Street. Phone +7 423 374-70-25 for the bus station.

Artyom is a rather sprawled city, with quarters spread at some distance from each other, making it difficult to explore entirely on foot. There are about 20 public bus routes, and taxis are commonly used for getting around.

Things to do

  • Memorial to the Sky Defenders — a MIG fighter aircraft mounted on a pedestal, commemorating the city's military aviation heritage.

  • Museum of Regional History (16A Kirova St) — exhibits on the city's mining and revolutionary history. Phone +7 42337 9-89-49.

  • Artyom Beaches — the beaches of Artyom are very popular in summer, usually packed with visitors. Roads for parking are crowded, and concessions are few. Small huts (about 1 m x 1 m) are available for changing. There is no fee to use the beaches. The Pacific Ocean provides a distinctive photo opportunity for visitors from other ocean basins.
