Iskitim

Novosibirskaya oblast', Russia

Why visit Iskitim?

Iskitim is a city in Novosibirsk Oblast, located about 60 km south of Novosibirsk along the M52 highway toward Barnaul. With a population of roughly 60,000, it is one of the larger towns in the southern part of the oblast. The city grew around a cement and construction materials industry established in the Soviet period, and manufacturing remains its economic backbone.

Iskitim sits in a transitional zone between the West Siberian Plain and the foothills of the Altai Mountains, giving it a slightly more varied landscape than the flat steppe to the north and east. The surrounding area includes mixed forests of birch and pine, small rivers, and agricultural land. The climate is continental, with cold winters (January averages around -16 degrees Celsius) and warm summers (July averages near 19 degrees Celsius).

The city is modest in size and attractions, with a quiet, working-town character. It serves primarily as a transit point for travellers heading south from Novosibirsk toward Barnaul and the Altai Republic. For visitors, its main draw is as a base for exploring the southern forests and the nearby Berdsk reservoir area.
