Why visit Novosibirsk?

Novosibirsk is a city of 1.6 million people in Novosibirsk Oblast, Siberia. Its main interest for visitors is as a stop-off on the Trans-Siberian Railway, two days from Moscow. The city was founded at the point where the Trans-Siberian Railway crossed the great River Ob, and its growth was dictated by engineering necessity — the railway needed a bridge, and a town grew up around it.

Originally called Novonikolayevsk, in honour of Saint Nicholas and Tsar Nicholas II, the settlement was founded in 1893 and grew rapidly. By the time the bridge opened in 1897, the population was 7,800; by 1907, when it exceeded 47,000, it was granted full town status. During World War II, many plants and factories were evacuated to the city, accelerating its industrial growth. In the 1950s, the Soviet Government directed that a centre for scientific research be built nearby, and in 1957 the multi-facility research complex Akademgorodok was constructed about 30 km south of the city centre. The city reached one million inhabitants by 1962.

Novosibirsk has a harsh continental climate. Winters are long and bitterly cold, with average January temperatures around -16 degrees Celsius and frequent drops below -30. Summers are short but warm, with July averages near 19 degrees Celsius and occasional highs above 30. The city is spread along both banks of the Ob River, connected by several bridges. The Left Bank (the original settlement) is the commercial and administrative centre, while the Right Bank is more residential. The metro system, with two intersecting lines, links the main districts.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Tolmachevo Airport (OVB), located about 20 km northwest of the city centre, is Siberia's busiest airport. It handles domestic flights from Moscow (approximately 3.5 hours), St. Petersburg, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Yekaterinburg, and other Russian cities, plus limited international services. A taxi from the airport to the city centre costs roughly 1,000-1,500 rubles. The Aeroexpress bus service connects the airport to the Novosibirsk-Glavny railway station and the metro, taking about 40-50 minutes for approximately 150 rubles.

By Train

Novosibirsk-Glavny is the city's main railway station and a major hub on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Direct trains connect to Moscow (approximately 33 hours), Irkutsk (approximately 36 hours), Vladivostok (approximately 68 hours), Almaty, and numerous Siberian cities. Regional trains serve towns within Novosibirsk Oblast, including Barabinsk, Toguchin, and Kuybyshev. Tickets can be purchased at the station or online via the Russian Railways (RZD) website; booking well in advance is recommended for long-distance trains.

By Car / Road

Novosibirsk is connected to Moscow by the M51 highway (approximately 3,300 km), though most travellers arrive by train or plane. The M52 highway runs south to Barnaul and the Altai Republic, and the R256 heads east toward Tomsk and Krasnoyarsk. Within the oblast, the M52 passes through Iskitim and Berdsk. Road quality on federal highways is generally good, but rural roads can be unpaved and difficult in spring and autumn.

The Novosibirsk metro system is clean, efficient, and one of the few metro systems in Siberia. It has two lines (Leninskaya and Dzerzhinskaya) that intersect at Ploshchad Lenina station. A single ride costs approximately 32 rubles. An extensive network of buses, trolleybuses, and trams covers the city; a single ride costs about 30-35 rubles.

Taxis are plentiful and affordable. Yandex.Taxi is the dominant ride-hailing app, with typical fares of 200-400 rubles for a trip across the city centre. Walking is practical in the central districts, particularly along Krasny Prospekt, the main commercial avenue. Rental cars are available but not essential within the city; traffic can be heavy during rush hours.
