Kargat
Novosibirskaya oblast', Russia
Why visit Kargat?
Kargat is a small town in the eastern part of Novosibirsk Oblast, located approximately 400 km east of Novosibirsk on the edge of the Baraba Steppe. With a population of roughly 10,000, it is the administrative centre of the Kargat District. The town was founded in the 19th century as an agricultural settlement in the steppe region.
The surrounding landscape is dominated by the Baraba Steppe — a vast system of wetlands, lakes, and peat bogs that stretches across much of the eastern oblast. The terrain is extremely flat, with elevation changes measured in metres. The climate is continental, with long, cold winters (January averages around -18 degrees Celsius) and warm summers (July averages near 18 degrees Celsius).
Kargat is one of the most remote towns in Novosibirsk Oblast, situated far from the main Trans-Siberian corridor. It offers an authentic experience of the Siberian steppe frontier and the unique wetland ecosystems of the Baraba lowlands.
