Berdsk
Novosibirskaya oblast', Russia
Why visit Berdsk?
Berdsk is a city in Novosibirsk Oblast, the region's second largest after Novosibirsk. Although it is far smaller than the capital — less than one tenth the size — Berdsk is much quieter, less polluted, and considerably older, having been founded as a fortress town in 1716. The original settlement was a military outpost established to guard the southern approaches to the Siberian heartland.
Sadly, none of the historic buildings have survived because the city was relocated when the original site was flooded by the Ob Sea reservoir, created by the turn of the 20th century hydroelectric dam built nearby. The modern city sits on the shores of this artificial lake, giving it a pleasant waterfront character unusual for Siberian towns. The population is approximately 100,000.
Berdsk has a milder climate than Novosibirsk, benefiting from its lakeside position. Winters are still cold (average January temperatures around -15 degrees Celsius) but somewhat less severe than in the regional capital. Summers are warm, with July averages near 19 degrees Celsius, and the lake moderates temperature extremes. The town is compact and walkable, with a relaxed atmosphere that contrasts with Novosibirsk's urban bustle.
