Why visit Olenegorsk?

Olenegorsk is a small industrial city of roughly 20,000 inhabitants located in the central Kola Peninsula in Murmansk Oblast, Russia. Founded in 1949 as an iron-ore mining settlement, the city is named after Mount Olenya (Reindeer Mountain) nearby. Olenegorsk sits along the Murman Railway and the M-18 highway, making it a natural transit point between Murmansk and Kandalaksha.

The landscape around Olenegorsk is characterised by tundra lakes, boreal forest, and low rolling hills. The climate is severe subarctic with long, cold winters and short summers. The area experiences polar night from late November to mid-January and the midnight sun from late May to late July.

Olenegorsk's economy is driven by iron-ore mining, operated by the Kovdor mining and processing plant. The town is small and quiet, with a handful of basic services and limited tourist infrastructure. It is primarily a transit stop rather than a destination, though its surrounding lake country offers opportunities for fishing and nature walks.
