Why visit Teriberka?
Teriberka is a small coastal village on the Barents Sea in Murmansk Oblast, Russia, located about 200 km northeast of Murmansk. Once a thriving fishing settlement, Teriberka gained international recognition as the filming location for the 2014 Oscar-winning film Leviathan, directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev. The film's depiction of a man battling a corrupt official against a backdrop of Arctic coastal desolation brought the village to global attention.
The village sits on the edge of the Barents Sea, where the landscape is characterised by rocky shores, tundra, and a dramatic meeting of land and sea. The climate is severe subarctic, but the Barents Sea influence moderates temperatures slightly compared to inland areas. The midnight sun illuminates the coast from late May to late July, and the northern lights are visible from September to March.
Teriberka has a small and declining population of roughly 1,000 inhabitants. The fishing industry, once the backbone of the village, has largely collapsed, leaving behind rusting boat hulls on the beach that have become an iconic photographic subject. In recent years, eco-tourism and film tourism have brought a modest revival, with guesthouses and small cafés catering to visitors drawn by the Arctic coast and the village's cinematic fame.
