Severomorsk
Murmanskaya oblast', Russia
Why visit Severomorsk?
Severomorsk is a closed military city and the second largest settlement in Murmansk Oblast, with a population of roughly 65,000. Located on the eastern shore of Kola Bay about 25 km northeast of Murmansk, it serves as the administrative base of the Russian Northern Fleet — the most powerful naval force in Russia's arsenal. The city was founded in 1951 as a naval headquarters and remains heavily restricted: foreign visitors are not permitted to enter without a special permit, and Russian citizens may only visit as part of an organised tour with advance paperwork.
The climate is severe subarctic, similar to Murmansk, with long, cold winters and brief, cool summers. Strong winds sweep across Kola Bay. Despite its military restrictions, the city has a small number of non-military sights and activities. The population is predominantly military families and civilian support staff.
For most travellers, Severomorsk is visible from the roads and waterways around Kola Bay rather than directly visited. The city's role in the Northern Fleet's history — from Cold War submarine operations to modern naval exercises — makes it a point of interest even for those who cannot enter.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By Plane
Severomorsk has no civilian airport. The nearest airport is Murmansk Airport (MMK), about 50 km away, with flights to Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and other Russian cities.
By Train
The nearest train station is in Murmansk, 25 km away. Only freight rail traffic continues to Severomorsk. Night trains from Moscow and Saint Petersburg arrive at Murmansk station; from there, taxis or buses reach Severomorsk in about 30 minutes.
By Car / Road
Severomorsk is at the very end of the M-18 highway (Kola Highway) that runs all the way from Saint Petersburg. Driving is straightforward, but the city's military status imposes heavy restrictions at checkpoints. Russian citizens may visit the city if they join a guided tour — permits must be obtained at least 30 days before the tour start date. Foreigners are not eligible to join these tours and will be denied entry. Do not expect to pass through the checkpoints without proper documentation.
The city is compact and walkable within the military zone. For those with access, local buses connect Severomorsk with Murmansk. Taxis operate within the city and to/from Murmansk.
