About Yugansky Nature Reserve

The Yugansky Nature Reserve is a protected area covering approximately 5,800 square kilometres in Khanty-Mansiyskiy avtonomnyy okrug, situated in the basin of the Yugan River. Established in 1982, the reserve protects one of the last remaining intact taiga ecosystems in the world — a vast expanse of boreal forest, wetlands, and river systems that has remained largely undisturbed by human activity. The reserve is part of the Virgin Komi Forests UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its exceptional natural value.

The landscape is dominated by Siberian larch and spruce forests, interspersed with marshlands, bogs, and meadows. The Yugan River and its tributaries meander through the reserve, supporting a rich diversity of fish species. The climate is subarctic, with long, cold winters and brief, warm summers. The reserve is home to a variety of wildlife, including brown bear, elk, wolverine, sable, and numerous bird species.

Visiting the reserve requires advance authorization and is typically organized through guided tours. The reserve plays an important role in scientific research on boreal ecosystems and climate change.

By Car / Road

The Yugansky Nature Reserve is accessible from Surgut by road (approximately 300-400 km, 5-7 hours depending on conditions), followed by river transport or hiking. Access is seasonal, with winter roads (zimniki) providing the most reliable connections during the cold months. Advance permits from the reserve administration are required.

Within the reserve, travel is primarily by foot along designated trails, or by river using boats or canoes. Motorized transport is restricted to protect the wilderness. Guided tours provide the necessary logistics and equipment.

Things to do

  • Intact taiga wilderness — pristine boreal forest of larch and spruce, among the last undisturbed taiga ecosystems on Earth.
  • Yugan River system — winding waterways through the forest, supporting diverse fish and wildlife.
  • Wetlands and bogs — extensive marshland ecosystems with unique flora and fauna.
  • Wildlife observation points — designated areas for observing brown bear, elk, wolverine, and bird species.

Guided nature walks and wildlife observation are the primary activities. Fishing in the Yugan River system (with appropriate permits) is available in designated areas. Canoeing and river excursions offer access to remote parts of the reserve. Scientific research programs occasionally accept visiting researchers and students.
