About Mamonovo
Mamonovo (former Heiligenbeil) is a small town of about 3,500 people on the Baltic coast, about 45 km west of Kaliningrad. The town lies on the Vistula Lagoon and is the closest Russian town to the Polish border — about 30 km from the Bagrationovsk border crossing. Its German name, Heiligenbeil, reflects its medieval origins.
The town is historically significant as the site of the Heiligenbeil Pocket (1945), one of the final battles of World War II on the Eastern Front, in which Soviet forces encircled and destroyed the German Third Panzer Army. The nearby village of Ladena (former Lichtenhagen) has memorial sites. Mamonovo itself is a quiet border town with a small fishing harbour on the lagoon.
Mamonovo has a maritime climate — mild winters with January averages around -3 degrees C and cool summers with July highs near 21 degrees C.
