About Ust-Kut

Ust-Kut is a small town of roughly 15,000 people in the northern part of Irkutskaya oblast', situated on the left bank of the Lena River where the Kut River joins it. Founded in 1631 as a Russian fort (ostrog), Ust-Kut is one of the oldest European settlements in eastern Siberia and was historically a major trading post on the route between European Russia and the Lena River basin.

The town's name means "mouth of the Kut River," and its position at the junction of navigable waterways made it a natural hub for trade in furs, gold, and other Siberian commodities. During the gold rush of the 19th century, Ust-Kut thrived as a supply point for miners heading into the Lena goldfields.

Today, Ust-Kut is a quiet settlement with a population that has declined significantly since the Soviet era. The town retains some historical wooden architecture and serves as a starting point for boat trips up the Lena River toward Yakutsk, the capital of the Sakha Republic.
