About Kirensk
Kirensk is a small town of roughly 12,000 people in the northern part of Irkutskaya oblast', situated on the left bank of the Lena River at the point where the Kirenga River joins it. Founded in 1630, Kirensk is one of the oldest European settlements in eastern Siberia and was historically an important trading post on the route between European Russia and the Lena River basin.
The town sits at the confluence of two navigable rivers, making it a natural transportation hub in the remote northern taiga. Kirensk's history is tied to the fur trade, gold prospecting, and river navigation along the Lena. The town retains some historical wooden architecture and serves as a starting point for expeditions into the surrounding wilderness.
For travellers, Kirensk is an extreme frontier destination. The town has minimal tourist infrastructure but offers access to some of the most remote and pristine wilderness in Russia. The journey to Kirensk typically involves a flight from Irkutsk or a multi-day river trip.
