About Dagestanskiye Ogni

Dagestanskiye Ogni is a small southern coastal town of approximately 30,000 people on the Caspian Sea, located about 90 km southeast of Makhachkala and 30 km north of Derbent. The town's name translates to "Dagestan Flames," referring to natural gas flares that once lit the shoreline — a reminder of the area's petroleum and gas resources. The town sits on a relatively flat stretch of coast with the Caucasus foothills visible to the west.

The climate is hot semi-arid, with long, hot summers (July average highs around 31°C) and mild, short winters. The Caspian coast here is less developed than around Makhachkala, giving it a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere. Dagestanskiye Ogni serves primarily as a residential town for workers in the local oil and gas industry, but its beach and proximity to Derbent make it a passing point for travellers exploring southern Dagestan.
