About Akhtubinsk

Akhtubinsk is a small city of roughly 40,000 people located on the left bank of the Volga River in the northern part of Astrakhanskaya oblast'. It serves as the administrative centre of the Akhtubinsky District and sits along the Akhtuba River, a major distributary of the Volga. Founded in 1959 through the merger of several older settlements, Akhtubinsk grew around fishing, agriculture, and its position as a regional transport node. The surrounding landscape is flat steppe and semi-arid grassland, typical of the Caspian lowlands.

The climate is continental semi-arid, with hot summers (July highs around 32°C) and cold winters (January lows around −7°C). The town is roughly 270 km northeast of Astrakhan and serves as a base for fishing trips along the Akhtuba and Volga rivers. Its character is quiet and rural, with a mix of Soviet-era apartment blocks and older wooden houses.
