About Gornyak

Gornyak is a small mining town in the southeastern corner of Altai Krai, roughly 450 km from Barnaul near the Kazakhstan border. With a population of about 10,000, it grew around mineral extraction — the town's name literally means "miner" in Russian. The surrounding steppe is punctuated by low hills and the occasional mining facility, with the Altai Mountains rising to the south.

The town was established in the mid-20th century to support the region's mineral extraction industry, including zinc, lead, and other ores. The climate is continental with cold winters (averaging minus 20 degrees Celsius in January) and warm summers (25–28 degrees Celsius in July). The best time to visit is June through August, when travel conditions are most favourable.

Gornyak offers an authentic glimpse into the working-class mining culture that sustains much of interior Siberia. It is not a tourist destination in the conventional sense but serves as a base for exploring the southeastern steppe and the Altai borderlands.
