About Sfantu Gheorghe

Sfantu Gheorghe is a remote fishing village of approximately 800 inhabitants at the southernmost arm of the Danube Delta, where the Sfantu Gheorghe branch meets the Black Sea. It is one of the most isolated settlements in the delta, accessible only by boat. The village is home to a significant Lipovan Russian community, descendants of Old Believers who fled Russia in the 18th century, and retains a distinctive cultural character shaped by centuries of life on the waterways.

The climate is continental with maritime influence, with warm summers (22–30°C) and cold, windy winters. The village is known for its long golden sandy beach, which stretches for several kilometres along the Black Sea coast and is considered one of the finest in the delta region. Summer (June–September) is the peak season, when boat services run most frequently.
