Suceava

Suceava is a county in northern Moldavia, in the north-east of Romania, historically part of Bucovina, with its capital and largest city at Suceava. The county is best known for the Painted Monasteries of Bucovina — Orthodox churches and monasteries built mostly in the 15th and 16th centuries under Moldavian ruler Stephen the Great and his son Petru Rareș, decorated with vivid exterior fresco cycles unique among Orthodox church art. Voroneț, Moldovița, Sucevița, Humor, Arbore, and others form the ensemble inscribed by UNESCO in 1993 (with Sucevița added in 2010) as the "Churches of Moldavia" World Heritage Site.

Suceava city is the main gateway and rail hub for the county; the monastery towns of Gura Humorului, Moldovița, and Sucevița are reached from there.

Romanian and Moldavian staples such as sarmale (cabbage rolls) and mămăligă (cornmeal polenta) are common across the region.

The UNESCO-listed Painted Monasteries of Bucovina are the county's defining attraction — Voroneț (known for its distinctive blue frescoes), Moldovița, Sucevița, Humor, and Arbore among them. Calimani National Park offers mountain scenery in the county's south-west.
