About Urziceni

Urziceni (population ~13,400) is a city in Ialomița County, 60 km northeast of Bucharest at the western edge of the Bărăgan Plain, on the banks of the Ialomița River. Founded by Romanian shepherds — its name derives from "urzică" (nettle) — it was first documented on 23 April 1596 during the reign of Michael the Brave. Urziceni was the capital of Ialomița County for 117 years (1716–1833) and remains an important transport hub where major roads converge. The city holds a remarkable football legacy: its club Unirea Urziceni won the Romanian league title in 2009 and played in the UEFA Champions League, making Urziceni the smallest town ever to have a team in that competition.
