About Targu Bujor

Târgu Bujor is a small town and commune in Galați County, located about 38 km west of the county seat on the banks of the Bujor River. With a population of around 5,000, it is one of the quieter settlements in the Moldavian plain, known primarily for its annual horse fair (Târgul de la Târgu Bujor), a centuries-old livestock and trade event that draws visitors from across the region.

The town's name derives from the beech forests (bujor) that once covered the area, and its history as a market town dates to the 18th century. The surrounding landscape is flat agricultural land, with fields of wheat, sunflowers, and maize stretching in every direction. The climate is continental, with warm summers and cold winters typical of the Danubian plain.

Târgu Bujor is best known as a base for exploring the rural heartland of eastern Moldavia and for the seasonal horse fair. It offers an authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience for travellers interested in traditional Romanian rural life.

Things to do

  • Târgu Bujor Horse Fair Grounds — The site of the annual livestock fair, held in early autumn, where horses, cattle, and traditional crafts are traded. The fair has been running for over a century and is a colourful spectacle.
  • Orthodox Church of the Assumption — The town's main church, a traditional Moldavian-style building with painted exterior details, located near the central square.
  • Bujor Lake Area — A small reservoir and surrounding wetlands popular with local anglers and birdwatchers, about 5 km from the town centre.

Attend the annual horse fair if visiting in early autumn — it is the town's signature event and a rare opportunity to see traditional Romanian livestock trading and horsemanship. For the rest of the year, walking through the town and surrounding villages offers a peaceful immersion in rural Moldavian life.

Fishing is a popular pastime at Bujor Lake and along the Bârlad River. Cycling on the quiet county roads through agricultural land is another option, with minimal traffic and flat terrain.
