About Turda
Turda is a city in Cluj County, Transylvania, located 34 km south of Cluj-Napoca on the Arieș River. With about 43,000 residents, it is known for the spectacular Turda Salt Mine (Salina Turda), one of Romania's most visited attractions. The Roman settlement was called Potaissa, and it housed the Legio V Macedonica fortress. In 1568 the Edict of Turda proclaimed religious freedom in Transylvania — a landmark in European tolerance. The Turda Gorge (Cheile Turzii) offers dramatic limestone scenery for hiking.
