About Dej

Dej is a municipality in Cluj County, Transylvania, about 60 km north of Cluj-Napoca, at the confluence of the Someșul Mic and Someșul Mare rivers. With about 31,000 residents, it has been a market town since the Middle Ages. Salt mining in the nearby Ocna Dejului has been a major industry since the Bronze Age. The city is also known for its connection to communist leader Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej, who worked here at the railway station and took his name from the city.

How to reach

By Plane

The nearest airport is Cluj-Napoca Avram Iancu International Airport, about 60 km south. From there, take a train or bus to Dej.

By Train

Dej is a railway junction on the lines connecting Cluj-Napoca to Baia Mare, Satu Mare, Bistrița, and Vatra Dornei. Frequent trains serve the station. The railway line from Cluj to Dej was opened in 1882.

By Car / Road

Dej lies at the intersection of national roads DN1C (Cluj–Baia Mare) and DN17 (Dej–Bistrița–Vatra Dornei). It is about 60 km north of Cluj-Napoca on the E81/E58 route.

The city center is walkable. Taxis are available for trips to the riverside neighborhoods and Ocna Dejului salt mines.
