Otelu Rosu
Caraș-Severin, Romania
Why visit Otelu Rosu?
Oțelu Roșu is a small industrial town in the Cerna Valley of western Caraș-Severin County, about 90 km southeast of Reșița. The town's name literally means "Red Steel," reflecting its history as a centre of ironworks and metallurgical production. Founded during the Habsburg period to exploit the region's iron ore deposits, the town grew around its smelting and forging operations, which supplied the wider Banat region with metal products. Today the heavy industry has largely wound down, leaving a quiet town with a strong working-class identity and a landscape shaped by both industrial heritage and the dramatic Cerna Valley.
The town is situated along the Cerna River, with forested limestone mountains rising on both sides. The climate is continental, with warm summers and cold winters; the valley's sheltered position makes it slightly warmer than the surrounding highlands. Oțelu Roșu is not a major tourist destination, but it serves as a base for exploring the western Cerna Valley and the southern reaches of Caraș-Severin. Băile Herculane, the historic spa town, lies about 20 km to the southeast.
