Semenic-Caras Gorge National Park
Caraș-Severin, Romania
Why visit Semenic-Caras Gorge National Park?
Semenic–Cheile Carașului National Park protects a dramatic karst landscape in the Anina Mountains of eastern Caraș-Severin County, southeast of Reșița. The park encompasses limestone plateaus, deep gorges, caves, waterfalls, and dense beech and fir forests. Its centrepiece is the Semenic Plateau, a high karst tableland dotted with sinkholes, disappearing streams, and underground rivers. The Cheile Carașului (Caraș Gorge) cuts through the limestone, creating a spectacular canyon with vertical walls and a rushing river at its base.
The park was established to protect one of the most geologically significant areas in the Western Carpathians. The karst formations include numerous caves, some of which are open to guided tours. The climate at higher elevations is cooler and wetter than the surrounding lowlands, with snow possible from November to April. Summers are mild (15–22°C on the plateau), making May through October the ideal visiting period. The park is accessible from Reșița (about 40 km) and from the Semenic resort area.
