Caransebes
Caraș-Severin, Romania
Why visit Caransebes?
Caransebeș is a city in Caraș-Severin County, Banat, Romania, at the confluence of the Timiș and Sebeș rivers. It has a population of about 21,700 and is an important railroad node, about 40 km from Reșița. The area dates to Roman times with the castrum of Tibiscum near Jupa. In the Middle Ages it was the seat of a Romanian district. The famous (possibly apocryphal) Battle of Caransebeș of 1788 — where Austrian troops allegedly fired on each other — is a well-known historical anecdote.
