About Oradea

Oradea (Hungarian: Nagyvárad) is the capital of Bihor County and one of Romania's most beautiful cities, known for its stunning Art Nouveau and Baroque architecture. Located on the Crișul Repede River just 10 km from the Hungarian border, Oradea has a rich Austro-Hungarian heritage and a bilingual Romanian-Hungarian character. Often called "Little Paris," the city was a major cultural and economic center in the 19th–20th centuries. Population approximately 183,000. Key attractions include the Baroque Palace, the Moon Church, the Black Eagle Passage, and the nearby Băile Felix thermal spa.

How to reach

By Plane

Oradea International Airport (OMR) is located 5 km southwest of the city center. TAROM operates domestic flights from Bucharest. The closest major international hub is Budapest's Liszt Ferenc Airport (BUD), about 150 km west, with excellent train connections to Oradea.

By Train

Oradea railway station (Gara Centrală) is well-connected. Direct trains run to Budapest (4 hr, 5 daily), Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest (including a night train with sleepers), Brașov, Arad, and Timișoara. As of 2025, the Cluj–Oradea line is being modernized with bus replacements until 2026.

By Car / Road

Oradea is located on the European route E60 (DN1), 10 km from the Hungarian border at Borș. From Budapest, take the M4 motorway to the border then continue on DN1. The city is also connected to Arad, Cluj-Napoca, and Satu Mare via national roads.

Oradea has an efficient public transport system with trams (tramvai) and buses covering all quarters. Tram line 3 goes to Nufărul, connecting to bus 511 for Băile Felix. Taxis and app-based ride services are widely available. The historic center is very walkable.

  • Roman Catholic Basilica — the largest Baroque cathedral in Romania.

  • Republicii Street — an incredible showcase of Art Nouveau and Secession buildings.

  • Criș Land Museum (Muzeul Țării Crișurilor) — exhibits on history, art, ethnography, and natural sciences.

  • Ady Endre Museum — dedicated to the great Hungarian poet.

  • State Theatre — a magnificent 19th-century building designed by Viennese architects.

  • Visit Băile Felix spa resort — take tram 3 to Nufărul then bus 511, for thermal baths and health treatments. Adult day ticket for Strandul Apollo is around 30 lei.

  • Art Nouveau walking tour — explore the many Secession-style buildings along Republicii Street.

  • Concerts and performances at the State Theatre and Philharmonic.

  • Shopping and dining in the pedestrianized city center.

Food & Dining

Oradea has an excellent dining scene. Restaurants serve Romanian, Hungarian, and international cuisine. Local specialties include gulaș, papricaș, mici, and sarmale. The city also has Chinese and Middle Eastern options. Dining is mostly in the center near Republicii Street, the Town Hall, and the Civic Center.
