Overview

Guarda (PT-09) is a District in the Beira Alta region of east-central Portugal, bordering Spain. It is the highest city in Portugal (1,056 m elevation) and the district encompasses the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, home to the highest mountains in mainland Portugal. The landscape features granite peaks, glacial valleys, and traditional schist villages, with a harsh continental climate of cold winters and warm summers.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Guarda is during spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October), when temperatures are pleasant and tourist crowds are smaller. Summer (June–August) is peak season with warm weather ideal for coastal areas, but popular destinations can be crowded and accommodation prices higher. Winter (November–February) is mild along the coast but cooler and rainier inland, with fewer tourists and lower prices. Check local festival calendars for unique cultural experiences throughout the year.

Getting Around

The best way to explore Guarda is by car, which provides flexibility to reach smaller towns and rural attractions. Regional bus services connect the main towns, and train services (Comboios de Portugal) serve major routes. In coastal areas, local buses and taxis are available. Cycling is a great option for exploring flat areas and dedicated bike routes. Ride-hailing services (Uber, Bolt) operate in larger urban centers.
