Why visit Reguengos de Monsaraz?
Reguengos de Monsaraz is a municipality in the Évora District of south-central Portugal, located roughly 170 km east of Lisbon and 37 km east of Évora. Sitting in the dry Alentejo plains near the Spanish border, the municipality centers around the modern administrative town of Reguengos de Monsaraz and includes the hilltop village of Monsaraz. The area borders Lake Alqueva, the largest artificial reservoir in Western Europe.
Travelers visit Reguengos de Monsaraz primarily for its viticulture, megalithic archaeology, traditional wool weaving, and lake recreation. The region produces some of Portugal's most acclaimed DOC Alentejo red wines, anchored by large cooperatives like CARMIM and historic estates such as Herdade do Esporão. Nearby São Pedro do Corval stands as one of the largest pottery craft villages on the Iberian Peninsula.
The climate is interior Mediterranean, characterized by long, hot, dry summers and cool, moderately wet winters. Summer daytime temperatures regularly exceed 35°C (95°F) between July and August, while winter temperatures range from 8°C to 15°C (46°F to 59°F). Annual precipitation averages around 550 mm, concentrated almost entirely between November and March.
