Why visit Vendas Novas?

Vendas Novas is a municipality in the Évora District of the western Alentejo region, situated approximately 85 km east of Lisbon. The settlement expanded rapidly in the early 18th century when King João V ordered a staging palace constructed to house the Portuguese and Spanish royal courts during the 1728 diplomatic marriage negotiations known as the Troca das Princesas.

The town has two primary claims to fame across Portugal: its operational military artillery garrison based in the former royal palace, and its signature sandwich, the Bifana de Vendas Novas. This sandwich consists of thin, tender pork cutlets pounded flat, simmered in a spiced garlic and white wine sauce, and served inside a warm crusty roll. The stretch of the national highway EN4 passing through the center functions as one of the country's most frequented roadside dining corridors for drivers crossing between Lisbon and the Alentejo interior.

Vendas Novas experiences a Mediterranean climate marked by hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Summer daytime temperatures frequently surpass 32–36°C (90–97°F) during July and August, while winter daytime temperatures stay between 10°C and 15°C (50–59°F).
